If yesterday’s weather wasn’t an indication – Spring is in full swing – and that means that weekends are starting to fill up with events and activities for you and your family!
This Weekend’s Events
If you are looking for native plants, you can visit the CSU Society for Ecological Restoration’s 7th annual Native Plant sale on May 7th at the Drake Farmer’s Market. They’ll have Perennials, Grasses, Trees, and Shrubs to select from.
Mother’s Day / Weekend – An interesting bit of trivia
Ann Reeves Jarvis, who is often credited as the founder of Mother’s Day in the United States, campaigned mightily to have the Federal Government recognize the second Sunday in May as an official holiday to honor all of the sacrifices that Mother’s make for their children. She celebrated the day with white carnations to honor her mother, whose favorite flower was the carnation, and white to represent the idea that mother’s love is the purest of all. It should be noted that in her later years she thought the holiday had become so commercialized that the original meaning was lost and began lobbying to have the holiday abandoned.
For us, our House of Chaos will be spending the weekend preparing the garden for planting by digging out weeds, amending the soil, getting the compost pile back into shape, and tending to other parts of the yard. We may even have an evening or two hanging out on the patio and just sharing conversation together.
However you celebrate Mother’s Day, make sure you give your Mama a big hug and let her know how much she means to you. As a mama myself, I know she’d love to hear from you and spend time with you if she can.
Until next time, may your knees be green and your spirit light – and if you head to the market or the spring plant sale, be sure to tell them that you heard about on Farming Fort Collins!
